Paying the waste collection charge
You must pay the waste collection charge (afvalstoffenheffing) for the collection and processing of your household waste. The waste collection charge is part of the municipal taxes (gemeentelijke belastingen) and is billed by your municipality.
Municipalities calculate the amount of the waste collection charge in different ways. Some municipalities calculate the amount of the waste collection charge based of the size of your household. The larger your household, the more you pay. Other municipalities calculate the charge based on the amount of waste collected.
The waste collection charge is included in the municipal tax bill. This is usually sent out in the first 2 weeks of February. If you have any questions about the waste collection charge, contact your municipality.
Apply for an exemption on paying municipal taxes
Are you unable to pay your municipal taxes? Then ask your municipality for an exemption. You can be granted an exemption from paying part of the taxes, or all of the taxes. The municipality decides for which taxes you can be exempt from paying. It also determines whether you are eligible for an exemption.
This is how it works for you
Here is some information from your municipality.
Waste charges
Please note. You only pay afvalstoffenheffing (waste disposal charges) if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.
Fixed and variable rate
The waste levy consists of two parts: a fixed rate and a variable rate. The fixed rate is for the collection and processing of all waste, except residual waste. The word says it all, this rate is fixed. A distinction is made between single-person and multi-person households. The variable rate depends on the number of times you present your residual waste. Your mini container or waste pass has a chip with which the emptyings are registered.
- Fixed charge single-person household € 205.44
- Fixed charge multi-person household € 291.84
- Variable costs per time 140 liter residual container € 4.26
- Variable costs per time 240 liter residual container € 7.48
- Throw-in collection container € 1.61
More information about the rates of the waste levy can be found on the SVHW's website.
Residual waste counter
Curious how many times you have offered residual waste and the times when you have done so? Then go to 'My SVHW' to 'My Assessments' and look at 'My residual waste counter'.

Do you have a minimum income and no assets? Then you may be entitled to remission of part of the waste levy. Do you think you qualify for this? Then apply for a waiver at the SVHW or call (0186) 577 222.
