Paying the sewage charge
You pay a sewage charge (rioolheffing) for your wastewater and for rainwater that ends up in the sewer. The sewage charge is part of the municipal taxes and is collected by the municipality, which uses that money to pay for maintenance and replacement of the sewers. Some municipalities also call the sewage charge sewage tax (rioolbelasting).
Each municipality has its own way of calculating the sewage charge. For example, some municipalities calculate the sewage charge based on the value of the property. Others base it on drinking-water consumption. To find out how your municipality calculates the sewage charge, contact your municipality.
The sewage charge is included in the municipal tax bill. This is usually sent out in the first 2 weeks of February.

Paying the sewage charge
The municipality manages and maintains the sewers, provides for the disposal of wastewater and takes measures for the treatment of rain (rain) and groundwater. To cover these costs, the sewerage charge is levied. Everyone who directly or indirectly disposes of wastewater via the sewerage system pays this sewerage charge.

The sewerage charge assumes an annual consumption of 300 m3 of wastewater. If more than 300 m3 of wastewater was disposed of in the year of consumption, you will pay extra for each subsequent 100 m3 of wastewater or part thereof.
In a residential home, water consumption averages 50 m3 per occupant per year. Total water consumption is generally well below 300 m3. It follows that only the basic rate is almost always due for a residential home.

Pay on time to avoid paying extra.
Waiver
You can ask the municipality if you do not have to pay (part of) the levy. This is called remission.
