Paying parking tax
Parking your car or other vehicle is not free everywhere and at all times in the Netherlands. In some areas and at certain times you have to pay for parking. By paying for parking you also pay parking tax (parkeerbelasting). If you do not pay for parking where and when necessary you will be charged a penalty. This penalty is called a parking ticket (parkeerbon). If you disagree with the penalty you can challenge it with the municipality.
Sometimes it is unclear whether you have paid for parking, for example if:
- the parking attendant cannot see your parking receipt in your vehicle’s window;
- the parking period on the receipt has expired;
- you have not paid for your parking using a parking app;
- you have not registered your car’s registration number in the parking app.
You will then receive a notice to pay for parking, plus the penalty.
Do you disagree with a penalty and wish to challenge it? You can contact the municipality that issued it. The municipality will then inform you of the conditions under which the parking ticket was issued. The municipality will also explain what you must do if you have received a parking ticket, and how to challenge the penalty if you disagree.
This is how it works for you
Here is some information from your municipality.
Parking fine
When you park your vehicle on the street (in the city centre and some neighbourhoods), you have to pay parking tax. You then pay for parking via a parking meter, a parking app or your mobile phone number.
Controls
At these locations, we use parking inspectors to check whether you have indeed paid the parking tax for parked vehicles. This is usually done with a scanning car. These inspectors register if you have not paid or not paid enough parking tax. If this is the case, no ticket is left on your car. Instead, you will receive an additional parking tax assessment (also known as a parking fine). You will usually receive this by post within 1 or 2 weeks.
Paying
You pay the additional parking tax assessment within 6 weeks of receiving it. Our account number is NL33 ABNA 0885 4086 91 in the name of Gemeente 's-Hertogenbosch. When paying, please state the 16-digit number mentioned on the assessment notice under the heading 'payment'.
Parking tax retrospective assessment
You may also be using a parking permit or visitor scheme. If you have not paid for parking, you will receive an additional parking tax assessment. This is called a parking fine. You will receive this parking fine from the municipality. The parking tax assessment consists of 2 parts. The additional charge (fine) plus 1 hour of parking tax for the zone where the vehicle was parked.
You cannot get a waiver of an additional assessment, but you can lodge an objection.
Filing an objection
Do you disagree with an additional parking tax assessment? If so, you can submit an objection within six weeks. This can be done by writing a letter of objection. Sign your letter and send it by post to Gemeente 's-Hertogenbosch, City Supervision Department, P.O. Box 12345, 5200 GZ, 's-Hertogenbosch.
For parking tax, you will not get a postponement of payment. Even if you object, you must pay the assessment within six weeks of receiving it. Do we declare your objection well-founded? Then we will refund the excess amount paid.
