Notifying the municipality when you move home

Are you moving home within the Netherlands? If so, notify the new municipality where you are going to live of your move. The new municipality will register you at your new address. You do not need to deregister from your old municipality.

The move can be notified by:

  • anyone aged 16 or older;
  • cohabiting spouses / civil partners on behalf of each other;
  • the parent, guardian or caregiver on behalf of minor children;
  • parents on behalf of adult children living with them;
  • adult children on behalf of parents living with them;
  • the conservator on behalf of a person placed under a conservatorship;
  • an authorised representative.

You must notify the new municipality where you are going to live that you are moving home. You must inform it of your new address no later than 4 weeks before the moving date, or within 5 days after the moving date.

This is how it works for you

Administrative fine

The municipality of Midden-Delfland can impose an administrative fine on you if you knowingly or unknowingly contribute to incorrect information in the Personal Records Database (BRP). For example, if you do not report your move. Or if you give someone permission to register at your address, while that person does not live there.

Have someone unsubscribe

According to the law, everyone is responsible for correct registration in the BRP. Anyone who moves must report this to the municipality. Is someone wrongfully registered at your address? Then ask for an address investigation. You can read more about this on the 'Address investigation' page.

In all cases, you need the following to report a move:

  • The lease or purchase agreement for the house at the new address or the extract from the land registry in which your name and the new address are stated.
  • If you are moving in or cohabiting, you will need to bring a copy of the proof of identity from the main resident and a statement that the main resident agrees to your registration at his or her address. You can use the pdf form Declaration of residence for this purpose.

And also when submitting online

You report your move online with DigiD. If you do not yet have a DigiD, you can request one via DigiD.nl. You will receive the DigiD login code within a few days.

By personal delivery

You need your valid proof of identity to personally report your move.

Submit in writing

When reporting a move in writing, you must also send the move form from the municipality. Don't forget to sign the form! Finally, enclose a copy of your valid ID.

Authorize someone

For an authorization, write a letter containing the following information: 'I hereby authorize (your initials, surname, date of birth and place of birth and address), the person listed below (initials, surname, date of birth and place of birth and address of the person you authorize) to report my move from (old address) to ( new adress).'

Sign this letter and give it to the authorized representative. Or use the authorization form.

At the counter, the authorized representative must show the following:

  • his or her valid proof of identity;
  • (a copy of) your valid proof of identity;
  • proof of your new address, for example a purchase or rental contract or permission from the main occupant if you are going to live with someone;
  • the signed authorization letter.

It is free to notify a move.

We will adjust your address details within five working days after receipt of all necessary information.

The municipality passes on your move to the authorities that need this information for the performance of their statutory duties.
