Notifying the municipality when you move home

Are you moving home within the Netherlands? If so, notify the new municipality where you are going to live of your move. The new municipality will register you at your new address. You do not need to deregister from your old municipality.

The move can be notified by:

  • anyone aged 16 or older;
  • cohabiting spouses / civil partners on behalf of each other;
  • the parent, guardian or caregiver on behalf of minor children;
  • parents on behalf of adult children living with them;
  • adult children on behalf of parents living with them;
  • the conservator on behalf of a person placed under a conservatorship;
  • an authorised representative.

You must notify the new municipality where you are going to live that you are moving home. You must inform it of your new address no later than 4 weeks before the moving date, or within 5 days after the moving date.

Please note: you can notify the municipality when you move house only if you live in the Netherlands and are already registered with a municipality.

You can also make an appointment to provide notification of your move at your municpality’s service desk. www.meerssen.nl

The conditions for reporting a move include:

  • You are 16 years or older.
  • You have permission from the resident if you move in with someone.
  • The move is communicated by: 
    • yourself
    • a parent, guardian or carer
    • cohabiting spouses or registered partners for each other (if they move to the new address together)
    • cohabiting parents and adult children (18+) for each other (if they move to the new address together)
    • a legal representative
    • an adult with written consent

You will need the following documents to notify us when you move house:

  • a valid identity document or a valid residence permit for the Netherlands. 
  • Proof of residence, such as a tenancy agreement, deed of sale or statement of consent from the main resident.

Submit online

Report your move online with DigiD. Are you going to live with someone? Or do you rent a room? Then keep the declaration of lodging or rental contract with you. You must scan it.

Pass it on at town hall

Is online passing on difficult for you? You can also report your move to the town hall. You can make an appointment for this.

If you notify the town hall of your move, you must bring the following with you:

  • A valid ID;
  • Are you going to live with someone or are you renting a room? You need a certificate of lodging or a rental contract. Use the form for this declaration of lodging .

Submit in writing

You can also notify us of your move in writing. Use the form for that. Also enclose a copy of your proof of identity with your declaration. Are you going to live with someone? Are you renting a room? Then send your tenancy agreement or the declaration of lodging (along with a copy of the main occupant's proof of identity) with the declaration.
