Notifying the municipality when you move home

Are you moving home within the Netherlands? If so, notify the new municipality where you are going to live of your move. The new municipality will register you at your new address. You do not need to deregister from your old municipality.

The move can be notified by:

  • anyone aged 16 or older;
  • cohabiting spouses / civil partners on behalf of each other;
  • the parent, guardian or caregiver on behalf of minor children;
  • parents on behalf of adult children living with them;
  • adult children on behalf of parents living with them;
  • the conservator on behalf of a person placed under a conservatorship;
  • an authorised representative.

You must notify the new municipality where you are going to live that you are moving home. You must inform it of your new address no later than 4 weeks before the moving date, or within 5 days after the moving date.

Notifying the municipality when you move home

Are you moving? You must always report a move to the municipality in which you will be living. You must also notify us if you continue to live in the same municipality.

You can report a move from 4 weeks before the move up to and including 5 days after the move. If you do not file a declaration in time, we will register the day on which your declaration was received as your moving date.

The declaration of relocation can be made by one of these persons.

Yourself, if you are 16 years or older
Parent, guardian or guardian for minors under the age of 16
Spouses/registered partners and adult children at the same home address for each other
The trustee for a person who has been placed under guardianship
Another adult with written consent (see above).
Are you going to live abroad for a longer period of time?
If you stay abroad for at least eight months or longer within a year, this is considered emigration. You must report this to the municipality within 5 days before your departure. You can arrange this digitally, in writing or in person at the town hall.

Is anyone still living at the old address?
Those who move must make a declaration in person at the town hall. This applies to everyone who moves with them, including minor children. You make an appointment for this

Do you want to come and live in the Netherlands from abroad for longer than 4 months?
You report your move personally to the town hall within 5 days of arrival.

Can someone else arrange the move?
Yes, you can authorize someone to do this. This person must:

being of age,
bring a written authorization from you. authorization form.
bring a valid (copy of) proof of identity for you and yourself.
What you need
To notify your move in person at the town hall or in writing, you need the following:

your valid ID,
if you are going to live with someone: a written statement of approval and (a copy of) a valid proof of identity of the main occupant. You can arrange this via the relocation declaration form.
To arrange your move digitally, you also need:

your DigiD login details.
