Applying for a Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag (VOG) in the Netherlands

Many jobs in the Netherlands require you to have a Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag – VOG (certificate of conduct). This also includes volunteer work. Examples are if you are going to work with confidential information or with children. A VOG shows that your behaviour is satisfactory for a new job. You may also need a VOG to apply for a visa or if you want to emigrate to another country.

There are several ways to apply for a VOG:

Applying for a Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag (VOG) in the Netherlands

A Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) is a statement showing that your past behavior is not an obstacle to performing a task or position in society.

Please note: You can only apply for the Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) if you are registered with a Dutch municipality.

You are registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP).

  • identification.
  • a completed and signed application form 'VOG Natural persons'.
  • An authorized representative must also bring: own ID. a completed and signed authorization form.

Digital

  • the employer or organization starts the application with eHerkenning at https://mijn.justis.nl/vog/vogorganisatie/inloggen.htm
  • you will then receive an email with a link and a request code.
  • log in with your DigiD and check the application.
  • pay the application via iDeal.

By appointment

  • make an appointment at the city office: Activiteit(en) | Gemeente Vlaardingen (mijnafspraakmaken.nl)
  • Apply for the Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) personally or through an authorized representative. Then complete the digital authorization form.
  • bring the fully completed 'VOG Natural Persons' application form with you. You will receive this form from the organization that requests the VOG from you. This is usually the (future) employer. You can also download the form via www.justis.nl.
  • the municipality forwards the VOG application digitally to the Ministry of Security and Justice.

The VOG application takes a maximum of 4 weeks. You will receive the VOG or a rejection by post at home from the Ministry of Justice and Security, Justis service.

Please note: There are commercial companies that ask you to submit the VOG application through them. This costs a lot of money. Only apply for a Certificate of Good Conduct through the municipality or through Justis. This saves you unnecessary costs. Do you not know whether your employer prepares the application with a form or digitally? Please contact your employer, do not prepare anything yourself.

You will receive the VOG or the refusal within 4 weeks at the address you specify in the application.
