Applying for study benefit for students with a disability

Do you receive government financial support for your tertiary or secondary education? Are you unable to earn extra income due to a chronic illness or disability? Then you may be eligible for study benefit (studietoeslag) from your municipality.

In all cases, the following conditions must be met to be eligible to receive study benefit:

  • you receive student finance (studiefinanciering) as a tertiary student or a basic allowance (basistoelage) for secondary students;
  • you cannot earn extra income alongside your studies because of your disability.
  • you are not entitled to the Wajong benefit

Ask your municipality about all the conditions that apply.

You can apply for study benefit at the municipality where you live, regardless of where you are studying.

Study benefit

Please note: you can apply for a studietoeslag (study benefit) only if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

The conditions are:

  • You are 15 years or older.
  • You must be registered in one of the following municipalities Gulpen-Wittem, Vaals, Valkenburg, Meerssen or Maastricht.
  • You do not receive the Wajong benefit (Wet arbeidsongeschiktheidsvoorziening jonggehandicapten).
  • You receive study financing or a contribution under the Wet tegemoetkoming onderwijsbijdrage en schoolkosten (WTOS).
  • You are unable to work alongside your studies due to a work restriction.
  • You have no income from work, with the exception of an internship allowance.

If you receive a stagevergoeding (internship allowance), you may keep the first €180 per month. Anything more you earn will be deducted from the study benefit.

You submit your application via Studietoeslag | Sociale Zaken Maastricht Heuvelland (socialezaken-mh.nl) (in Dutch).  After receiving your application, Sociale Zaken Maastricht Heuvelland has 8 weeks to make a decision. You will receive a letter about this. The municipality may extend this period 1 time (for a further 8 weeks) if required.

The supplement starts on the first day of the month in which you applied for it. It continues at most until you are no longer entitled to a student grant.

Please enclose with your application:

  • A copy of a valid form of identification.
  • A copy of your bank card (bank account number visible).
  • A copy of proof of study programme registration.
  • Proof of study financing (Wet studiefinanciering 2000) or proof of contribution to education and school costs from DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs).
  • If applicable, a document stating that you are arbeidsbeperkt (limited to certain types of work) or that you have a medische urenbeperking (limit to the number of hours you can work for medical reasons).
  • If applicable, copy of proof of internship allowance per month.

You will receive a letter informing you of the outcome within 8 weeks of your application. What happens if the application is incomplete or more time is needed for the investigation? Processing may take longer than 8 weeks in such cases.
