Applying for special social assistance

If you have a low income and it is impossible for you to pay exceptional and unexpected costs, you may be entitled to extra financial support from the municipality. This is called special social assistance (bijzondere bijstand).

Special social assistance is subject to the following conditions among others:

  • you are lawfully living and staying in the Netherlands.
  • you do not have enough income and funds to pay the costs yourself.
  • you are at least 18 years old.
  • you have expenses due to an exceptional or urgent situation, such as surgery or moving house.
  • you cannot cover the costs in any other way.;

Your municipality can tell you what other conditions apply in your situation.

Applying for special social assistance

Special assistance is for necessary expenses that you cannot pay yourself. Anyone with a low income and low assets can apply for special assistance. This includes people on minimum wage or AOW.

When can you apply for special assistance

  • You are registered in the municipality of 's-Hertogenbosch.
  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You have a low income.
  • Your assets (such as savings, expensive possessions, a car) do not exceed: 
    • € 7.575,00 for single persons.
    • € 15.150,00 for single parents, married couples/cohabitants.
  • Your costs are demonstrable, unforeseen and necessary.
  • You must incur the costs because of special or urgent circumstances.
  • Your costs are not reimbursed in any other way.

The supporting documents we need differ per application. Collect at least the following documents before you start the digital application:

  • Details of your assets and income, such as a statement of your bank account(s) for the past two months and payslips.

How long does it take

The processing of your application takes a maximum of 8 weeks from the time we receive all documents. You will receive a letter with the decision within 8 weeks.
