Applying for special social assistance
If you have a low income and it is impossible for you to pay exceptional and unexpected costs, you may be entitled to extra financial support from the municipality. This is called special social assistance (bijzondere bijstand).
Special social assistance is subject to the following conditions among others:
- you are lawfully living and staying in the Netherlands.
- you do not have enough income and funds to pay the costs yourself.
- you are at least 18 years old.
- you have expenses due to an exceptional or urgent situation, such as surgery or moving house.
- you cannot cover the costs in any other way.;
Your municipality can tell you what other conditions apply in your situation.

Applying for special social assistance
The conditions are:
- Your income and capital are lower than the capital limit that applies to you.
- Your costs are necessary and your costs have arisen due to special circumstances.
- You cannot rely on a provision for special costs.
Arrangements in writing
You can apply for special assistance in writing. You use the form: Financiële tegemoetkoming aanvragen (Apply for financial compensation).
Please send the following supporting documents:
- Income statements from the last month
- Bank statements of all bills from the past month
- Copy of a valid proof of identity (passport or identity card)
- Debt overview
Arrange at town hall
You can submit your application including attachments online, personally or by mail. If you want to submit your application personally you are welcome every Tuesday from 9.30 – 11.00 o'clock in the town hall in Wijhe or the Holstohus in Olst.
Financial contribution to medical expenses
Do you have collective health insurance through the municipality with Salland Verzekeringen? Then you will automatically receive an allowance of a maximum of € 400 per year. Have you taken out another additional health insurance policy? Then you can apply for this allowance of a maximum of € 400 per year.
We usually process an application for special assistance within 4 weeks. The legal term is 8 weeks.
You can object to the decision on your application. Do this within 6 weeks. Do you then disagree with the decision on the notice of objection? Then file an appeal with the court.
