Applying for a parking permit

Do you live in an area where you have to pay to park your car or other vehicle? You can apply to the municipality for a residents’ parking permit (parkeervergunning voor bewoners). If you have a residents' parking permit, you do not have to pay for parking at the parking meter or via a parking app.

A parking permit is registered to a specified vehicle registration number. If you have more than 1 car or other vehicle, you must apply for a separate parking permit for each vehicle.

This is how it works for you

Here is some information from your municipality.

Municipality of Amsterdam: Applying for a parking permit

To apply for a parking permit, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You are registered at the address for which you are applying for the permit.
  • The vehicle is registered in your name or you are the only user of the lease, hire or company car for which you are applying.
  • The vehicle may also have a non-Dutch registration number.
  • Your vehicle must meet the environmental requirements:
    • For diesel cars: emission standard 4 or higher.
    • For cars running on other fuels: emission standard must be 1 or higher.
  • Parking permits are never available for new-build projects. In some areas, instead of a parking permit, you can apply for a waiver for the blue zone (in Dutch).
  • You can apply for a maximum of 2 parking permits depending on your address.

Which documents you need depends on your situation.

Parking space at your house

If there is a car park for the building but you are not allowed to make use of it. Or you have or have had in the past, the  possibility of buying or renting your own parking space, you need a Declaration of No Available Parking, signed by the owner or manager of the premises.

Your own vehicle

No documents needed if the vehicle is registered in your name.

Company car

If the registration number is in the name of the employer you must scan and upload:

  • A salary slip in your name. No salary slip yet? Then your employment contract.
  • A declaration from your employer that states you are an employee of the company, and that you are the only employee with permission to drive the car. Maximum of 1 month old.

If the registration number is in the name of the partner or manager of the company, you must scan and upload:

  • Passport or ID card of the owner. Is the citizen service number (BSN) on the back? Then scan both sides.
  • A salary slip in your name. No salary slip yet? Then your employment contract.
  • A declaration from your employer that states you are an employee of the company, and that you are the only employee with permission to drive the car. Maximum of 1 month old.
