Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for a new passport or renew your old one? The application process depends on where you hold citizenship and where you live.

  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship? Then you can apply or renew at your municipality.
  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship, but have no fixed place of residence? Then you can contact a Dutch border municipality to apply for a new passport or to renew your old one.
  • Do you not hold Dutch citizenship? Visit your own embassy or consulate for a passport.
  • Do you live in the Netherlands on a valid residence permit? Are you unable to get a passport from your country of origin? Then you can apply for a vreemdelingenpaspoort (alien passport) at your municipality.
  • Do you live in the Netherlands as an erkend vluchteling (recognised refugee)? Then you can apply for a vluchtelingenpaspoort (refugee passport) at your municipality.

Do you live outside the Netherlands? See how to apply for your Dutch passport from outside the Netherlands.

This is how it works for you

Informatie:

Here is some information from your municipality.

Passport

There is also a Dutch identity card. This only allows you to travel within a part of Europe. An identity card is cheaper than a passport. Do you want to know which travel document suits you best? Then also read the information about the Dutch identity card on the website www.olst-wijhe.nl.

Do you think someone wants to abuse your identity? Or have you already become a victim of identity fraud? Immediately report this to the police. You need a report from the police to request a new proof of identity from the municipality.

You can apply for a passport if you have Dutch nationality.

Children under the age of 18 require permission from both parents or guardians when applying. Does one of the parents or guardians refuse to give permission? Then you can apply for replacement permission from the court.

  • All travel documents in your possession (both passports and identity cards). You must also bring expired travel documents with you.  Do you have dual nationality? Then also take your foreign travel document with you;
  • 1 color passport photo that looks good and is no more than 6 months old at the time of application. The photo provides a sharp, natural representation of the applicant (see also Passport photo, guidelines on the website www.olst-wijhe.nl).
  • In case of identity fraud: a Dutch official report of the old travel document.
  • Written permission from the curator, if you are under guardianship.
  • Enough money. You must pay for your passport when applying. You can pay in cash or with your debit card.

For children under the age of 18:

For children under the age of 18, parental and/or guardian consent is required. In the options below, we assume that both parents have custody. If only 1 parent has parental authority, only that parent will give permission

There are 3 options:

  1. Both parents or guardians will accompany you to the application. They must both identify themselves and sign a written statement of consent.
  2. A parent or guardian will accompany you to the application. He/she must identify himself/herself. The other parent or guardian gives permission via DigiD or written permission using a form. You should also bring a copy of his/her proof of identity.
  3. Is no parent or guardian coming along to the application? Then both parents or guardians must give permission via DigiD or written permission with a form. You should also take copies of their IDs with you.
  • In addition, the child must always be present at the time of application and collection.
  • The municipality scans your fingerprints with your application.

Request and collect
You apply for a passport in person at the municipality where you are registered. In Olst-Wijhe you can go to both the town hall and the Holstohus for this. When applying, you pay the costs of the passport. After five working days, your new passport will be ready for you at the location where you applied for the passport. You can schedule an appointment online to apply for or collect your passport.

Do you want to apply for a new travel document following loss or theft?
Submit the declaration of loss to the municipality when you lose your travel document or when you apply for a new travel document. We note the number of your old proof of identity in the basic register of travel documents to prevent identity fraud.

Do you want to apply for a new travel document as a result of identity fraud?

  • Go to the police to report identity fraud.
  • Have the police draw up a report.
  • Go to the municipality to request a new identity document due to loss or theft. Take the process story with you.
  • The municipality records the number of your old proof of identity in the Basic Register of Travel Documents.

A passport costs:

for persons up to the age of 18 - € 63.40
for persons from the age of 18 - € 83.85
extra costs urgent application - € 57.05

You can collect your passport after 6 working days. You have 3 months to collect the passport.
