Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for a new passport or renew your old one? The application process depends on where you hold citizenship and where you live.

  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship? Then you can apply or renew at your municipality. 
  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship, but have no fixed place of residence? Then you can contact a Dutch border municipality to apply for a new passport or to renew your old one.
  • Do you not hold Dutch citizenship? Visit your own embassy or consulate for a passport. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands on a valid residence permit? Are you unable to get a passport from your country of origin? Then you can apply for a vreemdelingenpaspoort (alien passport) at your municipality. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands as an erkend vluchteling (recognised refugee)? Then you can apply for a vluchtelingenpaspoort (refugee passport) at your municipality.

Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one

Do you live in Hollands Kroon? Then you can make an appointment online to apply for a passport. You also pay immediately online. We will visit you to complete the application. When the passport is ready, it will be delivered to your home.

What do you need?

  • One color passport photo that meets the passport photo requirements.
  • All previously issued travel documents (passport and/or Dutch identity card), even if they are no longer valid.
  • If your passport is lost or stolen, you must complete a declaration of loss or theft. Here you explain how you lost the old document. If there is suspicion of abuse, the police will be called.

Fingerprints

When applying for a passport, we take two fingerprints. These will be placed on the chip of your passport. We remove the fingerprints once you have received the passport.

You must apply for a passport in person at the municipality where you live. Make an appointment to apply for a passport.

How much is a passport? Rates 2024

  • Adults: € 83,87
  • Children up to the age of 18: € 63,42
  • Spoedaanvraag (urgent request): € 57,09 extra

Once we have visited you to complete the application, the passport will be generated. After this it takes an average of ten working days. Your document will be delivered free of charge at home, at work or at a location of your choice in the Netherlands. Except on the Wadden Islands. You must be present when the passport is delivered. If the passport is for a minor, an adult person (18+) must also be present.
