Applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for the Netherlands (Dutch) nationality? One of the ways is to apply for naturalisatie (naturalisation). You can hand in your application via your municipality.

Usually one of the conditions is that you have been legally living in the Netherlands for at least 5 years. Read all conditions of naturalisation on the website of the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).

In some cases there are exemptions to the condition of 5 years of legal residence.

The municipaity will send the application to the IND. The decision will be made by the IND.

The decision-making process takes a maximum of 12 months. You can track the progress of your application on the Mijn IND online portal.

Become Dutch

Do you want to become a Dutch national and are you registered in the municipality of Nieuwkoop? Then, if you think you meet the conditions for option or naturalisation , you can apply for Dutch nationality. You can make an appointment for this by telephone.

There are 3 ways to become a Dutch citizen:

  1. Automatically by birth (if 1 of your parents is a Dutch citizen at birth), adoption or recognition in the Netherlands.
  2. Through a short (3 months) simple procedure for becoming a Dutch citizen. This is called the option procedure. You must belong to a special group specified by law.
  3. If you are not eligible for the option procedure, you can become a Dutch citizen through naturalisation. This procedure usually takes less than 1 year and takes up to 2 years.

If you meet the conditions for option, the mayor will decide on this. More information about the conditions, the required documents, the procedure, the costs and the process after the grant or rejection can be found on the website of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
