Applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for the Netherlands (Dutch) nationality? One of the ways is to apply for naturalisatie (naturalisation). You can hand in your application via your municipality.

Usually one of the conditions is that you have been legally living in the Netherlands for at least 5 years. Read all conditions of naturalisation on the website of the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).

In some cases there are exemptions to the condition of 5 years of legal residence.

The municipaity will send the application to the IND. The decision will be made by the IND.

The decision-making process takes a maximum of 12 months. You can track the progress of your application on the Mijn IND online portal.

Applying for Dutch nationality

o you want to become a Dutch citizen? This can be done by option or naturalization. You request this from the municipality.

Description

You can apply for Dutch nationality in 2 ways: by option or naturalisation. By option is the fastest way. Not everyone can obtain Dutch nationality via option. The municipality will check whether this applies to you.

Can't you get Dutch nationality via option? Then you can obtain Dutch nationality through naturalization. In the case of naturalization, you must first integrate.

Has your request to become a Dutch citizen been approved? Then the municipality will invite you to a naturalization ceremony(link is external). After that ceremony you are Dutch. You can then apply for a Dutch passport or identity card.

Conditions for applying for Dutch nationality are:

  • You are of age.
  • You have a residence permit. Or you come from one of these European countries.
  • You have not been punished for a crime in the past 5 years.
  • You meet the conditions for option(link is external) or the conditions for naturalization.

Are you making an application for your child? The conditions for this include:

  • At the time of the application, your child lives in the Netherlands.
  • Your child has a residence permit.
  • Is your child 16 or 17 years old? In that case, your child must have resided legally and continuously in the Netherlands for at least 3 years before applying.

How to apply for Dutch nationality:

  • You go to the municipality.
  • You take with you:
  • your valid ID
  • a valid residence permit or other proof of lawful residence
(this is not necessary if you come from one of these European countries)
  • your birth certificate
  • with a naturalization request:
    • your integration diploma
    • possibly your marriage certificate
    • possibly a report of first or further interview
  • You pay with the application.
  • You will receive a letter with the decision and possibly an invitation to the naturalization ceremony.

An option request is handled by the municipality itself. When applying for naturalization, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) will decide whether you will become a Dutch citizen.

Your documents, such as the birth certificate, must be in Dutch, English, French or German. Is the document written in another language? If you come from the European Union, you can request a multilingual model form. Are you not from the European Union? Have the document legalized and translated.

The option procedure costs:

  • for you alone: € 200.00
  • for a married couple or registered partners: € 342.00
  • for a minor for whom you immediately make a request: € 22.00

Naturalization costs:

  • for you alone: € 945.00
  • for a married couple or registered partners: € 1,206.00
  • for a minor for whom you immediately make a request: € 139.00

You pay this with your application.

In the event of an option request, the municipality decides. The municipality will make a decision within 13 weeks of receiving your application. The municipality may extend this term once.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) decides on a naturalization request. A maximum of 1 year is required for the assessment and approval of your request.

You can object to the decision on your option request. Do this within 6 weeks. Do you subsequently disagree with the decision on the notice of objection? Then file an appeal with the court.

You can appeal the decision about your naturalization application to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
