Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

Childcare, reimbursement of personal contribution

If you receive childcare allowance from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst), you pay a personal contribution. In some situations you can receive a reimbursement from the municipality for (part of) the personal contribution.

Situations in which you can get compensation:

  • You receive a benefit from the municipality and you are following a reintegration program or training.
  • You receive a benefit from the municipality as a supplement to income from part-time work.
  • You are younger than 27, you do not have a basic qualification and you receive guidance from the municipality to go back to school.
  • Your social assistance benefits will stop because you have found work. In this situation you will receive a one-off compensation of € 300.

  • Your child(ren) are not yet in secondary education.
  • You take your child(ren) to a day care center or to host parents, registered in the National Child Care Register.

The municipality will send you a letter within 8 weeks informing you whether you are entitled to the compensation for the personal contribution to childcare allowance. That letter will also state how long you will receive the contribution.
