Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

To be eligible for the extra allowance the following conditions apply:

you must already be receiving childcare benefit from the Dienst Toeslagen;
your (joint) income must not exceed the limit. Your municipality sets the maximum amount.

Childcare allowance

You can apply for the childcare allowance through Mijn Toeslagen. You will need a DigiD login code to do this. You can also request the application form from the Belastingdienst.

Childcare allowance on socio-medical grounds

You can apply for childcare benefit on socio-medical grounds from the municipality.
To apply, an independent expert must first determine the need for childcare and issue a statement.
An independent expert is: the child care center, the GGD, home care, a general practitioner, an (ortho)pedagogue, a psychologist or medical advisor of the municipality.
The statement must consist of: Why is the child care needed, for how many hours/days per week is it needed and for how long

Childcare allowance

As a parent you are eligible for reimbursement of the own contribution by the municipality in the following situations:

You receive benefits and are following a training or (re-)integration program. This applies if you receive social assistance benefits or benefits under the IOAW, IOAZ or the General Surviving Relatives Act.
You are following a training course or study

Childcare allowance on socio-medical grounds

You can apply for childcare allowance on social-medical grounds at the municipality.

To apply, we must be able to determine the need for childcare. A letter from your attending physician about your situation is sufficient for us.
We also ask for an estimate of the number of days or hours per week the child care is needed and for how long. You can provide this yourself, or the attending physician can do this for you.
