Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

To be eligible for the extra allowance the following conditions apply:

you must already be receiving childcare benefit from the Dienst Toeslagen;
your (joint) income must not exceed the limit. Your municipality sets the maximum amount.

Does your child go to a nursery or childminder? Then you may be eligible for a contribution towards the costs of childcare. This allowance consists of childcare allowance and in some cases also the personal contribution.

The contribution towards the costs of childcare is regulated in the Childcare Act and is referred to as childcare allowance. In addition to the childcare allowance, you also pay a personal contribution.

The Childcare Allowance is provided by the Tax and Customs Administration. If there are social or medical reasons for (special) childcare, in some cases (part of) the costs can be reimbursed by the municipality.

Childcare allowance from the tax authorities

Whether you receive childcare allowance depends on your income and that of your partner. The Tax and Customs Administration also checks whether your child goes to a registered childcare organization and whether you work (or follow a trajectory to work). You will find all the conditions for childcare allowance on the website of the Tax and Customs Administration . As a foster parent or adoptive parent, you are also eligible for childcare allowance.

Apply for childcare allowance

You can apply for the childcare allowance at the Tax and Customs Administration . In that case, the organization that arranges childcare for you must be registered in the Landelijk Register Kinderopvang .

Allowance for social or medical reasons

You may not be eligible for childcare allowance. But that (special) childcare in a child center is necessary. For example, if there are social or medical reasons for this. Then you may be eligible for a contribution towards the costs of childcare from the municipality. The amount of the allowance partly depends on your financial situation.

For an allowance for the costs of childcare for social or medical reasons, an indication is required from a paediatrician of the consultation bureau .

The municipality will send you a letter within 8 weeks informing you whether you are entitled to the compensation for the personal contribution to childcare allowance. That letter will also state how long you will receive the contribution.
