Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

To be eligible for the extra allowance the following conditions apply:

you must already be receiving childcare benefit from the Dienst Toeslagen;
your (joint) income must not exceed the limit. Your municipality sets the maximum amount.

Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs

Childcare allowance is a (partial) reimbursement for the costs of childcare. For example, if your children go to a daycare center, after-school care or childminder.

You can apply for the supplement if:

you and your partner work during the day
you are following a course
you receive a benefit

The law and the subsidy relate to professional childcare.

Professional childcare offers, among other things: pedagogical expertise, adapted and hygienic accommodation, continuity, care, nutrition, age-oriented activities, safety and conviviality. There are all kinds of toys available and plenty of space for safe running and cycling. In addition to free play, there is a lot of cutting, pasting, claying, painting, reading and singing in childcare. The groups usually consist of twelve to fifteen children who are supervised by qualified teachers. There are own guidelines for childminders.

You can receive the supplement for the following types of childcare:

Day care in a crèche or nursery.
After-school care for children from 4 to 12 years old.
Childminder care. You can only receive an allowance for a childminder who is registered with a registered childminder agency.
Parent participation crèches where a group of parents takes turns looking after their own children.
Own babysitter. The babysitter is registered as a childminder and you pay the babysitter white. You can arrange this through a childminder agency.
Preschool for children from 2.5 to 4 years.

The amount of benefit you receive depends on your income, the number of children and the type of childcare. You can make a test calculation yourself at the Tax Authorities to see how much childcare allowance you can receive.
