Applying to collect a driving licence in the Netherlands

The main conditions for applying for a driving license are:

• You lived in the Netherlands for at least 184 days in the past year.
• You apply for your driving license within 3 years after your driving test. Otherwise you will have to take the exam again.

Check on CBR.nl whether you need to fill in a health declaration.(link is external) The CBR will then assess whether you are fit to drive. Sometimes the CBR needs more information. Then you must, for example, be examined by a doctor. Or take a driving test.

Do you want to exchange a foreign driver's license? Then additional conditions apply.

The age at which you may apply for a driving license depends on the type of driving licence.

If you are 17 years old, you can apply for a youth driver's license. You may then drive with a coach next to you. To do this, you can request a supervisor's pass from the National Road Traffic Agency (RDW). Read more about the youth driver's license on 2todrive.nl.

Renew your driving license online from now on! 

From 1 October it is possible in our municipality to apply for a driving license digitally. It is not necessary to make an appointment to collect the driver's license. All information is available on the website of the RDW.

Apply for a driver's license at the city hall

• You can make an appointment online with the municipality (the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee works by appointment).
• You come to the city hall
• You bring:
  • your valid ID
  • 1 color passport photo that meets the guidelines
  • your old driving licence, if you want to renew or replace your driving licence
• You pay for your driver's license with the application. Please pay with pin.

Lost driver's license? 

If you have lost your driving licence, if it has been stolen or if someone is misusing it, apply for a new driving licence. It is wise that you report the loss or theft as soon as possible. You can register a loss or theft report online with the RDW in advance, so that the driving license is immediately invalid.

Health statement 

Do you need a Health Declaration (Self-declaration)? Apply for this online at the CBR. You pay the Health Declaration with the application.

Passport photos 

You can have passport photos taken care of by a photographer, via an online passport photo service or you can take passport photos yourself at the city hall. The passport photos must always meet the passport photo requirements. You can use one of the two photo booths to take passport photos yourself in the city hall.

The costs are € 7.00. You can pay this amount appropriately or contactless.

You can apply for a driving license at the municipality if:

• you have passed a driving test for the first time.
• you passed a new category.
• your driver's license is about to expire.
• your ability to drive is restricted (for example due to an accident or illness).
• you want to exchange a driver's license (for example, a foreign or military driver's license).
• your driver's license has been lost or stolen.
• your driver's license is damaged.

A driver's license costs € 41.00.

Do you want to apply for a driving license urgently? Then you pay € 34.10 extra.

You can collect the new driving license from the municipality after 5 working days. You have 3 months to collect your driver's license.

Is 5 working days too long? Apply for a driving license via the urgent procedure. If you apply for the driving license before 2 p.m., you can pick up the driving license the next working day. You then pay a surcharge.

Is your driver's license missing? Then an urgent procedure is not always possible. Inquire about this at the municipality.
