Applying to collect a driving licence in the Netherlands
Have you passed your practical driving test? You can then collect your driving licence at your municipality. You are not allowed to drive a vehicle until you have collected your driving licence.
In the Netherlands the minimum age to sit a practical driving exam for a car is 17 years. Those who pass are only allowed to drive with a coach (supervisor), until they are 18. If you want to apply for a driving licence as a 17-year old, you must first apply for a begeleiderspas (accompanied driving permit) (in Dutch). You can then select up to 5 supervisors who can register to accompany you while driving. The names of the supervisors you have chosen will be on the accompanied driving permit. These supervisors accompany you while you are driving until your 18th birthday.

Applying for a driving licence
You want to apply for or renew a driving licence. Requesting and collecting is by appointment only. Don't forget to make an appointment to collect your driver's license.
Make an appointment
You make 2 appointments when you submit an application at the town hall:
- an appointment to apply for your driver's license
- an appointment to collect your driver's license, at least 5 working days after the application. Holidays do not count as a working day!
After an online extension, you only make an appointment to collect the driver's license, at least 2 working days after the application. More information at: www.amersfoort.nl/rijbewijs.

When to pick up
You must always collect your driver's license in person. After an online application, this can in principle be done after 2 working days. This can be done after 5 working days after an application at the town hall. Holidays do not count as a working day. You can only collect your document if you have an appointment.
Processing an urgent request before 2 p.m. takes 1 working day. After 2 p.m. it takes 2 working days.
You have 3 months to collect your driver's license. After this, the document will be destroyed and your application will lapse.
