Consul General Gerbert Kunst

The consul general is the head of the consulate, and represents the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the 13 westernmost states.

Gerbert (Gerrit Pieter Grades) Kunst was born May 25, 1966, in Hilversum, the Netherlands, in a family of five. His parents met in Amsterdam. His father worked as the director of a school for special education and his mother was a teacher.

After secondary school, Gerbert attended the University of Leiden, where he earned a master’s degree in Dutch business law. In 1991 Gerbert participated in the EU Erasmus Program, and studied International Relations and Law at the University Panthéon Sorbonne in Paris for six months.

In 2005 he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Business School Netherlands, and in 2014 a master’s degree in public administration from a combined program between the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and the Potsdam University.

He also completed his military service from 1990 until 1991, and became commander of the logistics platoon. He is a reserve first lieutenant.

In 1991 Gerbert began working as a lawyer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Fisheries. In 1995 he was posted in Brussels at the Dutch Permanent Representation, and from 2000 onwards he held management positions in the Hague, in the Representation of the Netherlands to the EU in Brussels, and in the Netherland’s Embassy in Berlin.

Before his appointment as Consul General of the Netherlands in San Francisco, Gerbert was the director of European and International Affairs at the Ministry of Economic Affairs. He was responsible for the EU internal market policy, and coordinated the European and international policy of the Ministry. In addition, he was involved in the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 1997, 2004 and 2016.

He is married to Margriet Knobbe, who holds a master of arts degree and a master‘s degree in law, and is working at a university of applied sciences. They have two sons and two daughters.

In his free time, Gerbert likes to play golf and tennis. He also enjoys traveling and reading literature (biographies and politics). He likes to attend sports or music events, especially the matches of his favorite soccer team Ajax. But most of all, he enjoys spending time with his family.
