How do I vote from abroad?

If you live abroad, you can vote in three ways: by post, by proxy, or at a polling station in a Dutch municipality. In each case you must first register as a Dutch voter abroad.

Voting by post

Dutch nationals who live abroad generally vote by post. You need to send your ballot paper to a postal vote polling station together with your postal vote certificate and a copy of your valid Dutch passport or identity card.

Voting by proxy

If the postal service in the country where you live is slow or unreliable, you can arrange for someone in Netherlands to vote on your behalf. You must apply for authorisation to vote by proxy in each individual election.

Voting in the Netherlands

If you are in the Netherlands at the time of the election, you can vote at a polling station in a Dutch municipality. You must apply for a voter's pass for each individual election.

In order to vote while abroad you must register as a Dutch voter abroad. You can do this via the website of the Municipality of The Hague.

Temporarily abroad at the time of an election

If you are only temporarily abroad when elections are held in the Netherlands, you must vote in a different way. To do so, however, you must be registered in your municipal records database in the Netherlands.
