Applying for a Dutch nationality cerficate if you live in Sudan

If you are a Dutch national living in Sudan, you can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate. You must provide a number of documents with your application. The documents you need depend on your personal situation.

You can use a Dutch nationality certificate to prove that you are a Dutch national. Or to retain your Dutch nationality.

Step 1: Create a personal checklist

When you apply for a Dutch nationality certificate, it is important that you provide the right documents. So you should first fill in the personal checklist for you or your child. Then you’ll know what documents you need.

  • Your foreign documents may need to be legalised.
  • If your document was not drawn up in Dutch, English, French, German or Spanish, you should have it translated by a sworn translator.
  • You may be asked to provide additional documents.
  • A Dutch nationality certificate is only issued in Dutch.

Proof of legal residence

You must provide proof of legal residence in the country where you live. In Sudan, you can do this by providing one of the following documents:

  • a valid visa and supporting documents;
  • a valid residence permit;
  • an Alien of Sudanese Origin Passcard;
  • a habitual residence certificate (certificate of nationality);
  • if you also hold the Sudanese nationality: a valid Sudanese passport or ID card.

How do you apply for a certificate?

You can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate at the Dutch embassy in Khartoum.

First make sure you have all the required documents. You can see which documents you need by completing the checklist (step 1). You should also check what additional requirements apply in Sudan (step 2). Then you can make an appointment.

How much will it cost?

A Dutch nationality certificate costs €30 per certificate.You can find the equivalent in SDG in the overview of consular fees in Sudan.

Payments can only be made in cash, in Sudanese pounds (SDG).

How long will it take?

The average processing time for applications is 3 weeks. If you are asked to send additional documents, processing may take up to 8 weeks. You will receive the certificate digitally by email.
