Applying for a Schengen visa for the Netherlands in Portugal
You don’t need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands if you live in Portugal. If you live outside Portugal, or if your current Portuguese residence permit will expire soon, find out what to do.

You don’t need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands if:
- you are a Portuguese national
- you live in Portugal and have a valid Portuguese residence permit
- you are in Portugal and already have a valid Schengen visa

If your Portuguese residence permit will not be extended, you can remain in the Netherlands and the other Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days after your residence permit expires. In some cases you will need a Schengen visa. This depends on your nationality.

If you are in Portugal and need a Schengen visa for the Netherlands for one of the following situations, you can apply for this visa at the embassy of Luxembourg in Lisbon:
- You didn’t need a visa for Portugal but do need one for the Netherlands. You have to travel to the Netherlands on short notice and didn’t know this when you travelled to Portugal.
- Your Schengen visa has expired or almost expired but you must urgently travel to the Netherlands, for example for medical reasons or following the death of a family member.
