Renewing your driving licence in Portugal?

If you live in Portugal and your Dutch driving licence has expired, you cannot renew it. You must exchange your Dutch licence for a Portugese licence.

Exchanging your driving licence

You can exchange your Dutch driving licence for a Portugese licence at the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) (information in Portugese). You will not need to retake your driving test.

If you want to apply for a Portugese driving licence, you will need a certificate of authenticity (information in Dutch). This certificate is issued by the Road Transport Agency (RDW). It shows whether your driving licence is listed in the Central Driving Licences Register. The certificate is in English. You don't need to have it translated into Portugese or have it legalised.

Driving licence lost or stolen?

If your Dutch driving licence has been lost or stolen you must apply for a Portugese driving licence. You can do so at at the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT) (information in Portugese).

You can download a statement of loss (PDF, 75kb) (information in Dutch) and send it to the Road Transport Agency (RDW). This will prevent unauthorised use of your driving licence.
