Applying for a Dutch nationality certificate if you live in Portugal

If you are a Dutch national living in Portugal, you can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate. You must provide a number of documents with your application. The documents you need depend on your personal situation.

You can use a Dutch nationality certificate to prove that you are a Dutch national. Or to retain your Dutch nationality.

Check if you need a Dutch nationality certificate

Step 1: Create a personal checklist

When you apply for a Dutch nationality certificate, it is important that you provide the right documents. So you should first fill in the personal checklist for you or your child. Then you’ll know what documents you need.

Please note: In Step 2, you will see whether there are additional document requirements in the country you live in.

Generate your personal checklist by answering a maximum of 10 questions:

At the moment the information of the personal checklist is only available in Dutch. Due to the Coronavirus publication of this information in English has been delayed.

Don't see a checklist? Please try again later. Or try loading the page again or opening it in a different browser.

  • Your foreign documents may need to be legalised.
  • If your document was not drawn up in Dutch, English, French, German or Spanish, you should have it translated by a sworn translator.
  • You may be asked to provide additional documents.

Step 2: Check the additional requirements/information.

Your documents may need to meet additional requirements in a given country. Below you can find out about the requirements for Portugal.

Proof of legal residence

You must provide proof of legal residence in the country where you live. Dutch nationals who have lived in Portugal for longer than 5 years can do this by providing one of the following documents:

  • a valid residence permit (Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia/Autorização de Residência). You can apply to the governing body (Câmara Municipal) of the municipality where you live for a Certificado. You can request an autorização de residência from the Portuguese Immigration Service (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF));
  • an extract from the Portuguese population register showing that you do not appear in the register. This can be obtained from the Conservatória dos Registos Centrais in Lisbon. The contact details are:
    Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca n° 198 – 202
    Tel: +351 (0)21 381 7600
    Fax: +351 (0)21 381 7698
  • if you also hold the Portugese nationality: a valid Portugese passport or ID card.

First-time application: legalisation of documents

If, according to your personal checklist (step 1), you need to get a document legalised, and the multilingual extract of your birth certificate or marriage certificate was issued in Portugal, legalisation is not necessary. You can use these documents to apply for a passport or ID card.

Do you have a document from another country? Then check whether it needs to be legalised.
