Renewing your driving licence in Iceland?

If you live in Iceland and your Dutch driving licence has expired, you cannot renew it. You must exchange your Dutch licence for a Icelandic licence.

Exchanging your driving licence

You can exchange your Dutch driving licence for an Icelandic licence at the office of the district commissioner for the district where you live (in Icelandic). You will not need to retake your driving test.

If you want to apply for an Icelandic driving licence, you will need a certificate of authenticity (information in Dutch). This certificate is issued by the Road Transport Agency (RDW). It shows whether your driving licence is listed in the Central Driving Licences Register. The certificate is in English. You do not need to have it translated into Icelandic.

Driving licence lost or stolen?

If your Dutch driving licence has been lost or stolen you must apply for an Icelandic driving licence. You can do so at the office of the district commissioner for the district where you live (in Icelandic).

If you want to apply for an Icelandic driving licence, you will need a certificate of authenticity (information in Dutch) and a declaration of loss or theft of the local police.

You can download a statement of loss (PDF, 75kb) (information in Dutch) and send it to the Road Transport Agency (RDW). This will prevent unauthorised use of your driving licence.
