I'm abroad and my Dutch driving licence has (almost) expired. What should I do?
If you are not in the Netherlands and your Dutch driving licence has expired or is about to expire, the steps you need to take depend on where you live.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, you may in some cases continue to drive in the EU/EEA if your licence has expired. You will in that case also be insured in the event of an accident. Whether this exception applies to you depends on when your driving licence expired (or will expire). You can find out more about the rules on expired licences during the coronavirus pandemic (information in Dutch) at Rijksoverheid.nl. Outside the EU/EEA you must have a valid driving licence. Driving with an expired licence there is an offence and you will not be insured.
