What will be the amount of my benefit under the Work and Income (Capacity for Work) Act outside the Netherlands?

If you are going to receive WIA benefit outside the Netherlands, the amount is usually the same as what you would receive in the Netherlands. Follow-up work resumption benefit for persons partially capable of work (WGA benefit) varies per country and could therefore be lower.

First check whether you are entitled to WIA benefit in the country where you live

Whether you qualify for WIA benefit in the country where you live depends on which country you are insured in. First check what applies in your situation.

Do I qualify for WIA benefit outside the Netherlands?

WIA monthly salary

The amount of your WIA benefit depends on the average monthly salary you earned in the year before you become unable to work due to sickness or disability. This average is determined by the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV) and is referred to as your ‘WIA monthly salary’.

Amount of benefit under the Income Support Scheme for Individuals Registered as Fully and Permanently Incapacitated (IVA benefit) outside the Netherlands

If you receive or are going to receive IVA benefit, the amount of your benefit abroad is the same as it would be in the Netherlands. That is, 75% of your WIA monthly salary.

You receive benefit and do not work

If you receive WGA benefit and do not work, for the first two months you will receive 75% of your WIA monthly salary. From the third month you will receive 70% of your WIA monthly salary. These are the same percentages that apply in the Netherlands regarding WGA benefit.

You receive benefit and do work

If you receive benefit and do work, the amount of your benefit is lower but your total income is higher. The amount of your benefit depends on how much you earn and what the UWV’s occupational health expert determines you can earn.

  • If you earn between 50% and 100% of what the occupational health expert determines you can, your benefit will be 70% of your WIA monthly salary minus 70% of the amount the occupational health expert determines you can earn.
  • If you earn at least 100% of what the occupational health expert determines you can, your benefit will be 70% of your WIA monthly salary minus 70% of the amount you earn.

These are the same formulas that apply in the Netherlands regarding WGA benefit.

WGA follow-up benefit

If you receive or are going to receive WGA follow-up benefit, the amount of the benefit may be lower based on the country where you live. This so-called ‘country factor’ is determined by the cost of living in the country where you live.
