May 5: Dutch Heritage Day in Canada
Parliament of Canada has declared every May 5th to be recognized as Dutch Heritage Day throughout the country. This in recognition of the sacrifices made by Canadians in the liberation of the Netherlands, as well as the contributions made to Canada by those of Dutch heritage, and to honour this unique bond between our two countries.
Every journey starts with a story
Stories of Second World War veterans who liberated the Netherlands, Dutch Canadians who immigrated to Canada, Princess Margriet who was born in Ottawa, and Canadians who say it is cool to be Dutch have been passed around for years. Often these stories are brought to life via many events that are happening each year throughout Canada.
In the Netherlands, on May 5th, we celebrate that we live in freedom. Throughout the country 'Freedom Meals' are being organized every year. In Canada, on May 5: Dutch Heritage Day, how will you celebrate your heritage and your freedom? For inspiration and examples of what you can do, please visit here.
